Dropped the boy off at Space Camp this afternoon and got to spend some time with the Saturn V, Apollo Command Module Casper (Apollo 16) and the F-1 engine at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville . Turns out the F-1 was intended to be used, but was damaged in a fire and never went back into circulation. The Saturn was the dynamic test vehicle and was never intendedfor flight.
The boy is stoked to be there. One of his buddies is there as well, so they are both more comfortable with things.

Awesome! Despite being just 90 minutes away AND having free entry, I’ve never been. The kids are still too young for me to spend the time I need there, and I’ve learned my lessons the hard way at the Smithsonian, every aquarium ever, etc.

Man, Stanley Kubrick really had an eye for detail.

I spent a good deal of time looking at placards and data plates.

My oldest went back for his 3rd year earlier this summer. We are going to register him for a 4th year (moving up to academy) next year, and send his younger brother for his first. The trek through rural north Alabama has become an annual tradition for me.

I’ll likely not be going back as the kids are almost grown now , but I got to spend a considerable amount of time there. Both of my kids did Space Camp and my son had 2 overnights as a Cub and 1 as a Scout at the Rocket Center. So we got to sleep under the Saturn V.

That’s cool! I just like soaking up the details.

Moon rock, huh? Psh...my hometown has one of those...
I joke...in all seriousness, that looks like an awesome place to visit. I remember how envious I was when my friends were going to Space Camp when I was a kid, and I couldn’t go. I could certainly spend an entire afternoon looking through all of those displays. The Saturn V would probably make me a little nervous though.
Edit: Jeez...I gotta start paying more attention to the date these posts were originally made. Sorry for digging up an old post.

Ha, no worries.
The Saturn is pretty epic to stand under and is worth it.
